Ever look at US cities and just scratch your head at the absurdity of their borders? This is Los Angeles, which has a completely insane border. Far more density than most folks realize, and a few things that stand out to me.
1. Their Interstate usage destroyed so many neighborhoods.
2. LAX Airport consumes what could be around several thousand houses or even MORE housing and other city usage but is instead consumed as the key route into and out of the city. The airport should honestly be 60-100 miles out of the city along the high speed rail line that could get folks into the city from the airport in ~25-45 minutes and also do something useful like serve the local population while the airport then doesn't consume vast amounts of high value community land within the city. Meanwhile it takes an hour or more to get to downtown LA from LAX, or almost anywhere else anyway. An utter mess and waste.
3. Los Angeles actually has a fairly decent (by US standards) light rail/rail/subway system now. That's those multi-colored lines going out from downtown and connecting to the actual central train station. Los Angeles could easily manage a few dozen million more people with just some improved frequency and management of those lines, But they should also endeavor to get additional lines running too - pending the city keeps growing.
