Applications

The Applications section of Settings shows the companion apps you use with InterlinedList, the machines you run them on, and the settings those apps keep in sync through your account. It lets you pick a main workstation, rename or remove a machine, and view or remove synced settings. This is available to everyone: no subscription is needed.

What synced app settings are

Some InterlinedList companion apps (for example the Visual Introspection app for Mac) save their own preferences to your account so they travel with you. When you sign in to one of these apps on a new computer, it can pick up where you left off instead of starting from scratch. InterlinedList stores these settings for the app but does not read or change them: they belong to the app.

You manage all of this from Settings, then the Applications section. Each app you have used appears as its own entry, listing the machines you have signed in on and a summary of the settings saved for your account.

Shared settings vs per-machine settings

An app can keep two kinds of settings:

  • Shared settings follow your account to every machine. These are the preferences you want to be the same everywhere you use the app.
  • Per-machine settings are pinned to one specific computer. These are preferences that make sense only on that machine, so they stay put and do not follow you elsewhere.

In the Applications section you can see which machines have their own per-machine settings, alongside the shared settings for your account.

What the main workstation does

One of your machines is marked as the main workstation. When you sign in to the app on a brand-new computer for the first time, that new machine starts from the main workstation's settings, so it feels familiar right away. After that, the new machine keeps its own per-machine settings.

The first machine you ever register for an app automatically becomes the main workstation. You can change which machine holds that role at any time.

Set the main workstation

  1. Go to Settings, then the Applications section.
  2. Find the app, then the machine you want to promote.
  3. Choose Set as main workstation for that machine.

The machine you pick becomes the main workstation, and whichever machine held the role before is no longer the main workstation. Only one machine at a time can be the main workstation for an app.

Rename a machine

  1. In the Applications section, find the machine you want to rename.
  2. Choose Rename.
  3. Type the new name and save.

Give machines names you will recognize (for example "Studio iMac" or "Work laptop") so it is easy to tell them apart.

Remove a machine

  1. In the Applications section, find the machine you no longer use.
  2. Choose Remove.

Removing a machine deregisters it and deletes the per-machine settings saved for it. If you remove the machine that was the main workstation, InterlinedList automatically promotes another one of your machines (the most recently used) to be the new main workstation. Your shared account settings are not affected.

View settings

Each app entry shows a summary of the settings saved for your account, such as when they were last updated and how much space they use. Choose View on an app or a machine to see the saved settings in full. Viewing never changes anything: it only shows you what is stored.

Copy a machine's settings to shared

If a particular machine is set up the way you want everywhere, you can copy its per-machine settings up to your shared account settings so they become the starting point across all your machines. In the Applications section, open that machine, then choose Copy to shared settings. The shared settings are replaced with that machine's settings, and future new machines will start from them.

Delete synced settings

You can delete the shared account settings for an app if you want to clear them out. In the Applications section, open the app and choose Delete shared settings. This removes the shared copy stored on your account; the app can create fresh settings again the next time it syncs.
