Messages
Messages are time-series posts similar to micro-blogging: share updates, links, and media with your followers, reply in threads, and react with a Dig. This page covers posting, visibility, replies, sharing, media, scheduling, and reporting.
Plain text posting is free for everyone. Attaching images or video, scheduling, and cross-posting are Subscriber features.
Posting a message
- Go to Home (or Dashboard; the message input appears in the left sidebar on Home)
- Type your message in the input field
- Use the visibility toggle to set public or private
- Optionally, open the advanced options (gear icon) to attach images or video, or to cross-post
- Click to post
Visibility
- Public: Visible to anyone (when viewing your profile or the feed)
- Private: Only visible to you
Your default visibility is set in Settings under Message Settings. You can override it for each message.
Replies
You can reply to any message you can see. When logged in, click Reply under a message to open the reply form. Replies appear nested under the parent message. If a reply has sub-replies, a "+N replies" link appears; click it to open the full thread view, which shows the original post at the top and every reply chained below it, each with its own Reply and Dig buttons.
The Dig reaction
Each message has an I Dig! button, a lightweight reaction. Click it to record a dig and increment the count beside the button; click again to undo. You can only dig a message once, and the author is notified the first time someone digs their post. The button is disabled when you are not signed in.
Reposting and quoting
There are two ways to re-share someone else's message:
- Push (repost): Re-shares the original as-is, with no added comment
- Quote: Re-shares the original with your own note added; a banner confirms the post will be public before you send it
Both pushed and quoted posts are always public.
Sharing a message
Every message has its own permanent page at an address like /user/<username>/status/<id>, which shows the full message and all of its replies. Clicking anywhere on a message's text or media (outside a button, link, or video control) opens that page.
Each message's action bar includes a Share button (the link icon) with two options:
- Copy link: Copies the message's permanent address to your clipboard
- Get embed code: Copies an HTML snippet you can paste into a blog post or web page to display the message there, the way you might embed a post from another social network. Viewers do not need an InterlinedList account to see an embedded public message
Only public messages can be linked to or embedded for other people. A private message's link and embed only work for you while signed in as the owner.
Cross-posting
When posting a new message, use the advanced settings menu (gear icon) to cross-post to Mastodon, Bluesky, and/or LinkedIn. You can select which connected Mastodon instances to post to and toggle Bluesky and LinkedIn individually. This requires linked accounts on the Integrations page and an active subscriber plan.
When replying to a message that was cross-posted: if you follow the original author on that platform, your reply may be cross-posted automatically. If cross-posting fails, a transient error toast appears for 5 seconds; your reply still appears on InterlinedList.
For a full explanation of how syndication works, what the platform labels in the feed mean, and how to set up each platform, see Cross-Platform Syndication.
Viewing preferences
Control what appears in your Home feed. Go to Settings, then View Preferences, and choose:
- All Messages: Your messages plus all public messages
- My Messages: Only your own messages
- Following Only: Messages from people you follow (plus your own)
- Followers Only: Messages from people who follow you (plus your own)
Link previews
When you include URLs in your messages, the app fetches metadata (titles, descriptions, thumbnails) and displays preview cards. You can toggle link previews on or off in Settings.
Images and videos
Subscriber feature. Attaching images and video to messages requires an active InterlinedList subscription. See Settings, then Subscription, to upgrade.
You can attach images and video to messages from the advanced post options. Enable "Advanced post settings" in Settings, then Message Settings, so the gear icon appears next to the message input. Click the gear to open the menu, then use the Image or Video button.
Images
- Limit: Up to 8 images per message.
- Size: Large images are automatically resized so the longest side is at most 1200 pixels and the file size is under 1.4 MB. You can select any size; the app handles resizing.
- Flow: Click Image, choose file(s), then click Upload. Use Done to close the modal and keep your attachments, or Cancel to discard any images added in this session.
Video
- Limit: 1 video per message.
- Size: Maximum 3 MB. Files over 3 MB are rejected (no automatic compression).
- Formats: MP4, WebM, QuickTime (.mov), and AVI.
- Flow: Click Video, choose a file, then click Upload. Use Done or Cancel as with images.
Media is stored securely and displayed inline with your message. You must have verified your email before you can post images or video; see Account & Security for how to verify.
Scheduled posts
Subscriber feature. Scheduling requires an active InterlinedList subscription.
Scheduling lets you write a message now and have it published automatically at a future date and time.
- Write your message in the compose box
- Open the advanced options (gear icon)
- Click the calendar icon to open the schedule dialog
- Pick a date and time in the future. The dialog also shows a checkbox for each connected cross-post account (Mastodon, Bluesky, LinkedIn, X/Twitter) so you can choose which networks receive the post when it goes live
- Click Confirm. The compose button changes to Schedule Message; click it to save
A note below the compose button shows the scheduled date and time. To cancel scheduling and post immediately instead, click the displayed date.
Editing or cancelling a scheduled post. Open your Scheduled posts from the Dashboard. Each scheduled post shows its content, scheduled time, and the destinations selected. Click the edit icon to change the time, the message content, or which networks will receive the post. If LinkedIn is selected, the same LinkedIn destination picker from the compose box appears here. To cancel a scheduled post, open it and delete it.
Character limit
Each user has a configurable message length limit (default 666 characters). Adjust it in Settings, then Profile (not Message Settings).
Reporting a message
If you see a message that violates community standards, open its more options menu (the three-dot icon) and choose Report. Pick the reason that best fits (Spam, Harassment, Misinformation, Inappropriate content, or Other) and optionally add a short explanation before submitting.
Reports are reviewed by moderators; submitting one does not automatically remove content. You can't report your own message. Reporting the same message again updates your existing report rather than creating a duplicate. For blocking, muting, and reporting people, see Blocking, Muting & Reporting.
Email verification
You must verify your email address before posting messages. Check your inbox for the verification link, or request a new one from Settings.
