Create from…
Create from… turns almost anything you already have into a brand-new List, a new Document, or both at once, without retyping it. Point it at a message, a list, some list rows, or a document, choose a destination, review what will be created, and confirm.
Subscriber feature. Creating lists and documents requires an active InterlinedList subscription. If you are on the Free plan you can still open the menu, but confirming a creation prompts you to subscribe. See Subscription & Billing or open Settings, then Subscription, to upgrade.
The three choices
Every entry point offers the same three options:
- To List: Builds a new list with one row per item. You can adjust the columns before creating.
- To Doc: Builds a new markdown document containing the item's content.
- To List & Doc: Creates both in a single step.
Where you'll find it
The action shows up in two forms:
- + Create ▾ menu: On a single item, click the + Create button and pick To List, To Doc, or To List & Doc.
- To List / To Doc / To List & Doc pills: When you have several items selected, three buttons appear in the selection bar. Click one to create from everything you've selected.
You can start a "Create from…" flow from all of these places:
- A message: From a single message's actions, or by selecting several messages in Select mode on the Home feed or the dashboard message table.
- A list: From a single list on the Lists overview or its detail view, or by selecting multiple lists.
- List rows: From a single row inside a list, or by selecting several rows.
- A document: From a whole document, or from a highlighted selection of text in the document editor. Highlight some markdown (headings and bullet points) and use the Selection menu to turn just that part into a list or a new document.
The preview and edit step
Choosing an option opens a finalization window that shows exactly what will be created before anything is saved. You can switch the destination here too, using the To List / To Doc / To List & Doc buttons at the top.
For a list, you can:
- Set the list title and an optional description
- Edit the columns: rename them, change each column's type, remove ones you don't need, or Add column
- Choose whether to make the list public
A live table on the right previews the rows and columns you'll get.
For a document, you can:
- Set the document title and file name
- Choose whether to make the document public
- Adjust the list style (numbered or bulleted) and how row data appears (inline or as sub-items) when the source is a list or multiple rows
A rendered preview on the right shows the document you'll get.
When everything looks right, click Create. On success, links appear to open the new list and/or document right away.
What the defaults look like
The window fills in sensible starting points based on what you're converting:
- Messages to List: Columns default to Content, Author, Posted, Links, and Tags, with one row per message.
- A document to List: Each heading and bullet point in the document becomes its own row.
- Anything to Document: Produces a markdown document you can keep editing like any other.
You can change any of these in the preview step before confirming; the defaults are just a head start.
