Messages Are the Front Door

Here's the thing most people get backwards about InterlinedList when they first see the post box. They assume it's a megaphone: type something, everyone sees it. That's not the default, and it's not really the point - albeit it could be if you want it to be - thus you can change the default in settings. But I digress, let's continue.

When you write a post, it's private by default (unless you change it). Just you. The "Public" toggle sits right there in the composer, unchecked, until you decide to flip it. So the first thing Messages actually are is a place to think, not a place to perform.

A Scratchpad You Actually Keep

I use it as a memory. A note to myself. A link I want to come back to. A half-formed idea I don't want to lose before it turns into something. It's the "let me jot this down before I forget" box, except the jot doesn't vanish into a notes app you'll never open again. It lands on your own timeline, privately, and it's there when you go looking.

Two small things keep the scratchpad from turning into a pile. First, tags. You can tag any post (recipe, music, event, a link you'll want in three weeks) so future-you can dig it back up instead of scrolling forever. Second, links stay live. Drop a URL into a private note and it's a real clickable link when you come back to it. Posts are plain text, no bold or headings in the feed, and that's fine. A scratch note doesn't need formatting. It needs to exist and be findable.

From a Note to Something Real

A private note isn't the finish line. It's raw material. The whole idea behind InterlinedList is that a scrap of a thought should be easy to grow into the thing it was trying to become.

When a note has earned it, you can turn a post straight into a Document or a List in one step. The three links you've been collecting become a List. The paragraph you fired off at midnight becomes the start of a Document. The quick thought expands into real structure without you rebuilding it by hand. That's the part I'm proudest of: the site is built to move your ideas forward, from a scratch note to something you'd actually show someone.

When You're Ready to Say It Out Loud

And sometimes you are ready to show someone. That's the other half, and it's a good half.

Flip "Public," and the note becomes a post on your feed, where people who follow you can read it, reply, and hit "I Dig!"

Once you're posting in public, InterlinedList is there to help you keep a real presence without it eating your whole day. From that same box you can cross-post to Bluesky, Mastodon, LinkedIn, and X/Twitter at once, so you write it once and it shows up everywhere you already are. You can schedule a post to go out later, so your timeline stays alive even when you're heads-down on the work you're posting about. (Cross-posting and scheduling are the subscription. That's the whole shape of it, and it's the whole shape of InterlinedList. First, it's yours: a private place to manage your own ideas and the work you're doing. Then, when you want it to be, it's a way to get those ideas out and show the world what you're building. The same little box does both, and it never makes the second one the default.

Start there. Make a free account, write one private note, tag it, and come back to it tomorrow. If it grows into a List, a Document, or a post you send to four networks at once, even better. But it's yours first.
